A new business in Colonie has opened its doors offering a novel way for clients, builders and architects to visualise construction plans on a full scale before a single brick is laid. The business, WalkThru NY, gives people the chance to step inside their future home plans projected life size onto a floor. The idea behind the service emerged after years of experience in construction and real estate made co‑founders aware of a recurring flaw: many clients only fully understand space and layout once construction is complete when modifications can be expensive or impractical.

Co‑owners are builder Alex Ritmo and real estate salesperson Gabe August. Over his ten years working across the Capital Region, Ritmo often heard clients regret the size of rooms or layout decisions. August decided that there had to be a better way to help clients make informed decisions before construction. The pair launched WalkThru NY on October 29. Their 5,000 square foot facility in Colonie features a just-over-2,000 square foot floor onto which clients can project full scale floor plans. The space also includes a conference area and an overhanging bridge that overlooks the projection floor.

A new approach to planning space before building begins

Six projectors using edge blending technology combine to cast a seamless, life-size floor plan. In addition a vertical projection space of 640 square feet allows clients to visualise elevations or vertical features such as cabinet height or ceiling height. Clients can walk the projected floor plan and sense the proportions, the flow between rooms and how various spaces relate to each other. According to August, this immersive experience enables changes before construction begins, and allows people to visualise finishes, colours, materials, cabinetry or even furniture placement.

WalkThru NY is not limited to simple home builds. The founders suggest their service can be used for larger commercial developments, home renovations, landscaping, pool planning or even wedding venue layouts. In one envisioned use case, staff at a hospital plan to bring a stretcher into the space to test whether corridors and elevators are wide enough, effectively simulating real life use before construction. The building includes garage doors so clients can bring in real furniture or equipment to test space and flow.

This approach arguably solves a common problem for many homeowners and builders. Traditional two dimensional blueprints or even 3D renderings on a screen often fail to convey what a space will truly feel like when built. Clients may misjudge hallway widths or room proportions, or underestimate how furniture will fit. With WalkThru NY’s 1:1 scale projections, clients can literally walk through the design.

Bridging the gap between design and lived experience

The concept is not entirely new. There are other firms and services around the world offering life size floor plan projections or immersive walk‑throughs of proposed layouts. Some refer to the approach as 1:1 scale projection of architectural plans, allowing clients to walk through their future home before committing to build. These services often feature large projection rooms onto which entire houses including landscaping, parking spaces or multi‑level layouts can be projected. Such immersive planning tools have become more relevant with the growing demand for interactive, client‑friendly design methods that reduce surprises during construction.

Architectural 3D visualization and floor plan projection services have been shown to improve communication between clients, designers and builders. They help homeowners and stakeholders visualise space, materials, finishes and spatial flow long before construction begins. That clarity reduces miscommunication, avoids costly changes mid‑project and aligns expectations with reality. They serve not only as design tools but also as decision‑making and risk‑mitigation tools for renovations, custom homes and larger developments.

Of course, such services may have limitations. They require clients to physically visit the projection centre, which may not be convenient for all. Some may prefer digital 3D renderings or virtual reality solutions that can be shared remotely. There may also be constraints on the scale of projects. Very large floor plans or multi‑story buildings may not fit into the projection space used by WalkThru NY. Nonetheless companies offering walkable life‑size projections argue the benefits outweigh these drawbacks by giving clients the truest sense of space and lowering potential dissatisfaction after construction finishes.

With WalkThru NY now operating and available to clients, the founders hope their business becomes an integral part of the design and building process. Their ambition is for architects, builders and home owners to treat the walk‑through as a standard step before construction begins. Over time they anticipate wider adoption and possibly even new use cases they have not yet imagined.
