Through partnerships, people, and smart expansion, Action Gypsum Supply is proving that independent distributors can thrive
Founded in 2003 in Houston, Texas, Action Gypsum Supply (Action Gypsum) is a privately owned, full-service drywall distributor operating across several states. As one of the strongest independent distributors in the Southwest, the company offers everything from gypsum wallboard and steel framing to acoustic ceilings, insulation, doors, frames, and hardware, as well as stucco and EIFS. Focusing on solutions-based, personalized customer service and collaborative long-term partnerships, Action Gypsum has not only grown geographically but also added new capabilities to its portfolio via strategic acquisitions.

Taylor Pittman, Vice President of Strategy, and Tony Espinosa, Director of Inventory, tell us more about the company’s evolution. “In recent years, we’ve seen the industry move away from being very cost driven towards a solution and service driven approach instead,” he begins. “We’re a service-oriented business and we pride ourselves on working for our customers, tailoring our products and services to their specific requirements. We don’t simply sell products but rather deliver complete solutions.”
This customer-centric approach has led to long-term relationships with clients, encouraging repeat work for some of the world’s leading brands. “We’ve worked on several projects for Tesla in Austin, Texas, and we’ve completed a handful of projects at Disneyland, California, including a significant expansion of the park’s Star Wars attraction. We’re now working at Disneyland again, specifically on the Pandora, World of Avatar, area,” Taylor explains.
“These kinds of clients value that we are a true partner, viewing ourselves as an extension of our customers’ production activities rather than a supplier,” he emphasizes. “In terms of projects, we’re also currently working on the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas, as well as Googleplex, the expansive Google campus in Northern California. In Texas, we’re working with SpaceX down in Rio Grande Valley and with Samsung on their chip manufacturing facility in Taylor, alongside continuous work for Tesla.”
Expansion strategy
Successful projects like these, along with long-term relationships, are the backbone of Action Gypsum’s growth. While many construction material suppliers are being overshadowed or integrated into larger corporate organizations, Action Gypsum remains an independent provider and is also helping other smaller businesses retain independence via acquisition.
“We recently finalized our fourth acquisition in March 2026 of a company called J&L Supply of Northern California (J&L), which has two branches in California – one in Chico and another in Redding,” Taylor explains. “This acquisition, along with the three previously acquired companies, has been pivotal to our growth and maintaining our position in the industry. There’s a lot of consolidation happening across the market, but as like-minded independent businesses that were once part of our purchasing circle, Affiliated Distributors, these companies decided to remain independent by joining Action Gypsum rather than becoming part of a larger corporation.
“We’re also excited to reveal that we’re opening a new yard in Visalia, California, which will be our first site in central California, and we hope it will already be operational at the time of publication,” he adds. “We’re also soon opening a location in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which will be our second site in the state. Tulsa is a very customer-driven market, and there is a real desire for people to have a trusted and reliable partner in our space.”
Aside from acquisitive and geographic growth, the business has also invested significantly in new technologies to enhance its processes and customer service. “I’ve been with Action Gypsum for over 20 years now, but the company’s willingness to invest and implement new technologies and systems still amazes me,” Tony states. “There has also been a huge change in terms of technology compared to when I first started here, and there are so many tools that help us perform more efficiently and accurately.

“We’re currently exploring innovative AI tools, which would allow us to better serve our customers. We don’t want to remove human interaction from our customer service processes but rather remove the time-consuming elements that would allow our people to spend more time directly with our customers. We’ve also been working on a submittal tool that would provide customers with a single data point for the specifications and compliance information they need daily. This is still in the early stages of development, but this is the kind of AI integration that would provide customers with ultimate convenience.”
As Tony explains, AI is being used across the business to support its operations and employees, not replace them. “Our people and culture continuously play a significant role in securing effective growth,” Taylor states. “We have an exceptional team, and we want to retain as much talent as possible. We prioritize promotion from within, and as we continue to grow and open additional branches, we can provide exciting progression opportunities across the team.”
Being better
With a collaborative culture, long-term client relationships, and a willingness to invest in people and processes, Action Gypsum is continuing to flourish as an independent materials provider amid market consolidation. As our conversation closes, Tony and Taylor turn to what’s next on the company’s agenda.
“Like all businesses, we’re currently navigating macroeconomic factors and uncertainty while continuing to provide the industry-leading service we’re known for,” Taylor shares. “Despite these geopolitical factors, it’s important that we remain a reliable and trusted partner for our customers. We’re constantly challenging ourselves to be better, whether it’s implementing new processes, strengthening customer partnerships, or growing our employees.”
Taylor concludes: “In the longer-term, we’ll continue to grow, but growth is only effective if your operations can support it. This philosophy guides our approach to entering new markets and acquiring other businesses, as we must ensure our internal infrastructure can achieve such growth. It’s a great time to be an independent business in our sector, as there has been major consolidation that has left both geographic areas and talented personnel in need of a business like Action Gypsum.”
