When it comes to professional, high-end painting, Reynolds Painting Group FL (RPG FL) is a committed advocate of the craft. A trusted name in the industry since the 1990s, RPG FL, has worked on an innovative range of projects across Florida, from painting luxury condominiums, hotels, schools, hospitals, casinos, airports, office buildings. Launched in New Jersey by Mike Reynolds and his two brothers, Mike’s nephew Jacob Kobuta is the current Vice President of Operations, and he joins Construction Today to discuss the family business, revealing how it moved further South and telling us more about ongoing projects.
“Since my uncle started the business with his brothers, they worked up and down the East Coast before they ended up going their separate ways,” opens Jacob. “In 2009, one moved to North Carolina, one stayed in New Jersey, and Mike came down to Florida. We’re based in Tampa, but we’ve carried out work across the entire state, including Naples, West Palm Beach, Miami, and for Disney in Orlando.”
When Mike made the move to Florida full-time in 2009, it was less a fresh start than a deliberate pivot – RPG FL had already been doing work in the state since 1999, and Mike recognized the opportunity to go all-in on a market that was ready to grow. His wife Regan was central to that transition, providing steadfast support as the business shifted its center of gravity south and scaled its Florida operations. “Regan was right there alongside Mike through all of it,” Jacob reflects. “We already had roots here, and she helped make sure that when we committed fully to Florida, we were set up to do it right. The family side of this business has always been one of its greatest strengths.”
As part of six concurrent projects, the group transformed Tampa Bay with its groundbreaking work on Water Street – a wellness-focused waterfront community. “Water Street brought the first five-star hotel to Tampa, and it really changed the landscape of the city,” notes Jacob. “We completed it during the Covid-19 pandemic, along with every other contract in that development. To be able to finish painting all those high-end buildings during one of the biggest financial and economic crises in recent memory is a huge accomplishment for us.”
Jacob describes Florida as an opportunity-rich market, citing its constant growth. “We’re excited to be part of it,” he continues. “A few exciting projects we’re working on right now is South Flagler House in West Palm Beach, Waldorf in Miami, Pendry Tampa, and Rosewood Naples.”

This commitment has resulted in a dedicated QA team focused on upholding standards across projects and client services, alongside heavy investment in training and developing in-house painters. “We also have a full training department that we’re building out,” he says. “Our painters have different levels of experience – some join as apprentices and learn how to brush, how to roll, and how to become a well-rounded painter in the company with the ability to take on various tasks. One of our goals is to make our painters the highest paid in the country.”
Investment in people is an enduring priority for the company, offering its employees benefits such as health coverage, 401(k)s, and development opportunities. “Construction is really the foundation of America,” Jacob states. “It’s a fantastic industry to be in – you can work for the same company while combining an accounting degree with manual labor, for example.”
In 2026, the group plans to hire new staff and focus on training to boost expansion. “As a subcontractor, we absorb a lot of the risk,” explains Jacob. “Integrity is a key element in our business and it’s important we find good people to work with.” This applies to partners and clients, as well as employees. “We maintain strong relationships with our vendors – we have a 30-year partnership with Sherwin-Williams, and we work collaboratively on some exceptional structures. We’re strategic about which projects we choose and we strive to deliver the best work possible. Our name is on the building, and our partners affect our work too, so these balanced relationships are incredibly valuable for all businesses involved.”
The next generation
Perhaps one of the most compelling chapters in the RPG FL story is the emergence of the next generation of family leadership. What began as Mike’s vision has grown into a multi-generational enterprise, with a new wave of family members bringing their own skills and drive to every corner of the business. Callahan, Ryan, Josh, Olivia, and Jacob have each stepped into roles that reflect the full scope of RPG FL’s operations – from the field to finance, from project management to client relations. “There’s something special about working alongside family,” says Jacob. “We all have a stake in this – not just financially, but personally. When your name is tied to the work, you hold yourself to a different standard.” Together, this second generation brings fresh perspective and energy to a company built on decades of craft and reputation, positioning RPG FL for continued growth across Florida and beyond.
For RPG FL, growth revolves around being the ‘best in the business.’ Jacob elaborates: “Honestly, our goal has never been about being the biggest company in terms of revenue. Obviously, that would be a great achievement, but we want to focus on being the best in our industry. When people think of high-end projects in Florida – maybe even high-end projects across the country – we want them to think of us. Our main priority is our standards. We have highly talented painters, and we want to deliver the best finish in the business. Painting is a craft; there’s spraying, brushing, rolling, cutting, prepping – even the method of opening a paint bucket is integral. We take a measured, expert approach to every aspect of the process, which is imperative in deluxe buildings. As a painter himself, Mike started the company from scratch, and that same standard has carried the business to where it is now. Essentially, we’re going to continue selecting jobs that allow us to deliver excellence.”
