Persons Services builds on its legacy with vertical integration, digital innovation, and ambitious plans for growth
In 1978, Paul F. Persons Sr. started Persons Services in Mobile, Alabama, with little more than $500, a strong work ethic, and a simple promise: to do quality work and take care of customers. Now, nearly 50 years later, that same entrepreneurial spirit is driving a company with more than 300 employees, $350+ million in expected 2026 revenue, and capabilities spanning construction, infrastructure, industrial mechanical services, and disaster response.

Today, four operating groups bring those capabilities together under one roof. From complex industrial and infrastructure projects to commercial construction and emergency response, Persons Services combines self-performance, company-owned equipment, fabrication, technology, and disciplined project management to tackle challenges others may not be equipped to handle.
“Self-performance is one of the biggest differentiators in our business,” Buddy Persons, President of Persons Services, explains. “There’s a cost to doing it – you must recruit and retain skilled tradespeople, continually train them, own and maintain equipment, invest in supervision and project controls, and keep those resources productive. But when it is done correctly, the advantages to the customer are significant. We control more of the variables that determine whether a project succeeds: labor, productivity, quality, equipment, sequencing, and schedule. If conditions change in the field, we can move people, equipment and resources ourselves.
“Similarly, our fabrication operation is an important part of our vertical integration strategy. Taking fabrication out of the field and moving it into a controlled environment gives us significant advantages in quality, productivity, safety, dimensional control, and schedule certainty. We can coordinate fabrication with BIM, detailing and project sequencing, and perform more work before it reaches the jobsite, reducing field congestion and field labor hours. That becomes particularly valuable on industrial and mission-critical projects where tolerances, weld quality, documentation, and schedule are extremely important.”
By keeping critical capabilities in-house and integrating them into its project execution, Persons Services ensures consistent high standards, exceptional risk management, and accountability from planning through completion. This discipline is reflected in the company’s core values of safety, quality, and performance, which permeate every aspect of its operations.
“Persons Services has a full-time health, safety, environmental, and quality department (HSEQ) with over 15 full-time employees. We view safety, quality, and performance as interconnected rather than separate initiatives,” Buddy details. “Our safety management system tracks both leading and lagging indicators, including training, inspections, near misses, behavioral observations, EMR, TRIR, and other metrics. The larger objective is creating a culture where people identify risk before it becomes an incident.
“Quality is approached the same way. Inspection and test plans, three-phase inspections, material verification, documented field inspections, and accountability are built into project execution rather than added at the end. One of our core values is ‘Each 1 Teach 2’. The idea is simple: every person who develops knowledge has a responsibility to pass that knowledge to others. Our culture emphasizes that leadership is earned, not assumed. We want high-performance people with low ego who are curious, accountable, willing to teach, and willing to be challenged.”

Similarly, the company sees digital tools and emerging technologies, including AI, as a way to strengthen these systems, supplying its teams with better information to identify trends, and potential issues earlier in the project lifecycle.
“We believe construction is entering one of the most significant periods of technological change the industry has experienced, and we want to be on the front end of it. We’ve already invested heavily in the digital foundation: Procore, Microsoft 365 and Teams, Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project, HCSS HeavyBid, BIM, AutoCAD, GPS machine control, drone mapping, 3D modeling, and digital field documentation,” Buddy elaborates. “AI is the next layer. We are using it to accelerate areas such as preconstruction, estimating, document review, project planning, knowledge management, reporting and administrative workflows. Over time, I believe it will become increasingly important in project controls by helping companies identify trends and risk much earlier than they historically could.”
Built better
As Persons Services continues to evolve, so does the complexity of the work that it takes on. Developing these capabilities gives its teams greater visibility, better coordination, and more control throughout the life of a project, which is especially important in the sophisticated, schedule-driven environments where the company has increasingly been called upon to perform.
“We have been fortunate to perform work for companies such as SpaceX, Airbus and Novelis, where the construction environment is sophisticated, schedule-driven, and technically demanding,” Buddy reveals. “Our infrastructure work for Airbus in Mobile has included significant site and utility construction associated with expansion of its manufacturing operation. We have also performed utility infrastructure work supporting SpaceX, along with major water, wastewater and heavy-civil programs in Texas. Our work at Novelis’ new Bay Minette aluminum facility is another example of where PSC is headed: large, complex industrial projects where our construction, mechanical, fabrication, infrastructure, and project-management capabilities can create real value.”
As it looks to the future, Persons Services is still building on the same foundation: do quality work, take care of the customer, and never stop improving. As the company takes on increasingly complex projects, its combination of self-performance, vertical integration, experienced people, and forward-looking technology positions it well for its next chapter ahead.
“I want Persons Services to be recognized nationally as one of the most capable and respected self-performing contractors in the markets we choose to serve. We are continuing to grow, but our philosophy about growth has matured. Geographic expansion must follow customers, talent, and opportunity. When those three things align, we are willing to go where the work makes strategic sense. From a service standpoint, I think you will continue to see us deepen rather than randomly diversify,” Buddy affirms.
“I think the thing I am most proud of is that Persons Services has never really stopped reinventing itself. We began with one man doing plumbing work in Mobile, Alabama. Today, there are generations of men and women who have helped build Persons Services, taught the next person, taken difficult assignments, solved problems for customers, and carried the company’s reputation into the next project.
“Our brand uses the phrase ‘Built Better’. To us, that means building better teams, better systems, better leaders, and better relationships with customers. If we continue doing those things and remain curious enough to keep changing, we believe the best years of Persons Services are still ahead of us.”
