Highly-Anticipated Klein Road Project Wraps Up Ahead of Schedule
The $13 million Klein Road widening project in New Braunfels is officially complete, marking a significant milestone in the city’s effort to enhance transportation infrastructure. This vital upgrade, funded through the 2019 Bond Program, transformed a crucial stretch of Klein Road into a four-lane thoroughfare. Designed to improve traffic flow, safety, and pedestrian accessibility, the project reached completion nearly a year ahead of its projected timeline, delighting local residents and commuters alike.
The details of the Klein Road project
The Klein Road widening project was a comprehensive upgrade to a 0.75-mile stretch that addresses long-standing traffic and safety concerns. The road was expanded to four lanes, a critical change to accommodate the increasing volume of vehicles in the rapidly growing community. In addition to the roadway expansion, several enhancements were implemented:
Low-water crossing upgrade: Ensures better drainage and safety during heavy rains, minimizing road closures.
FM 725 intersection improvements: Optimized for smoother traffic flow and safer turns.
Pedestrian-friendly features: The addition of an 8-10 foot shared-use path and 6-foot sidewalks enhances accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.
Despite initial projections extending the completion into fall 2025, efficient project management allowed the work to conclude ahead of schedule in December 2024. The project’s funding came from multiple sources within the 2019 Bond Program, including voter-approved bonds, contributions from the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation, roadway impact fees, and tax notes.
