Discover how SME Industries executes architectural steel structures with unrivaled precision
Fabricator and erector of specialized steel structures and components SME Industries (SME) is renowned for its expertise in the regional, national, and international markets. To serve its clients, the company strives to be a one-stop-shop with a comprehensive product range, including buckling restrained braces (BRBs), special moment frame systems, miscellaneous metals, paint and coatings, specialty fabrication of ornamental metals such as stainless steel, bronze, and other non-ferrous metals, and feature staircases. It is most well-known for its steel fabrication and erection. Additionally, SME’s shops are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, thus ensuring projects are delivered with the highest quality. Landon Moyes, CEO and President, feels strongly about the company’s position in the market.
“Our story began when Craig and Jerry Moyes acquired a bankrupt steel company and turned it into SME Industries in 1992. SME Steel, one of several businesses under the SME Industries umbrella, has since grown into one of the largest steel fabricators and most respected steel erectors in the US. With roots deeply embedded in innovation, precision, and excellence, SME Steel has built a legacy of delivering high-quality structural steel solutions. These products are vital for various applications, including some of the most iconic projects in the nation and complex steel structures across a range of industries.
“From skyscrapers and stadiums to bridges, data centers and industrial facilities, our commitment to superior craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology, and customer-centric solutions has made us a trusted partner in the construction industry. We do all of this with a strong long-standing relationship with Union Ironworkers. With decades of experience and a relentless focus on performance, we continue to set the standard for structural steel fabrication and erection. The variety of structures we have helped build is truly amazing, encompassing rides at Disneyland, hospitals, the Vegas skyline, stadiums such as SoFi Stadium, The Chase Center, and Levi’s Stadium, as well as other iconic structures that generations of people will admire and enjoy,” he adds.
Quality and precision
Among these segments, data centers stand out as a core growth market for SME Steel. Justin Pitts, Vice President of Sales and Estimating, explains how the company expects its work in data centers to evolve going forward. “A rapidly expanding sector, the data center market is driven by the growing global demand for data storage and processing capabilities, which are needed everywhere, from phones to televisions. There is going to be incredible growth in this sector over the next five years and we have strategically positioned ourselves as a leading provider for these critical services, leveraging decades of experience and an unmatched ability to fabricate and erect such complex structures. Our proven expertise in fast-track delivery, comprehensive preconstruction services, and adaptability to perform under expedited schedules makes us a trusted partner for the mission-critical data center sector. As the demand for reliable and high-capacity data centers continues to rise, we are anticipating sustained growth in this segment. To facilitate this expansion, we are actively investing in advanced infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, and top-tier talent to ensure we remain at the forefront of this dynamic market, delivering the quality and precision our clients depend on,” he enlightens.
Prestigious projects
Landon Moyes, President and CEO, returns to the conservation to highlight SME’s most significant projects. “We are proud of the projects we have contributed to and often feel great satisfaction when seeing one of the colossal structures our team has worked on for years. In downtown Las Vegas, people are surrounded by the buildings we have fabricated and erected, as we are particularly active in the heart of the city and have played a key role in shaping its iconic skyline. Two recent projects that I am particularly proud of are SoFi Stadium and the (W)rapper building. SoFi Stadium is a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment venue, representing a true marvel of modern engineering and architectural design. This project demanded an unparalleled level of precision due to its intricate steel framework and seamless integration of advanced fabrication techniques. Every element of the stadium was carefully planned and executed, which required exceptional coordination across disciplines and the capability to adapt to an ambitious and groundbreaking architectural vision. With its massive scale, intricate geometry, and global visibility as a centerpiece for sports and entertainment, SoFi Stadium represents a crowning achievement in our portfolio. Moreover, it demonstrates our ability to tackle some of the most complex and high-profile projects in the world, further cementing our reputation as an industry leader in delivering structural excellence on a large scale.
“On the other hand, the (W)rapper building serves as a prime example of innovation and creativity in architectural design. Its uniquely curved, exoskeletal structure stands out as a bold statement of form and function, pushing the boundaries of traditional engineering and design. The project presented significant challenges, such as the need for advanced engineering solutions to accommodate its unconventional geometry. We overcame these issues by leveraging our expertise to deliver precision, quality, and functionality. Our involvement in the (W)rapper is not only a testament to our technical skills but also to our ability to collaborate with visionary architects and designers. Through such collaboration, we make it possible to transform groundbreaking ideas into structures that inspire and captivate. This project underscores our commitment to innovation and our leadership in shaping the future of construction,” Landon elaborates.
Green priorities
When delivering projects, SME remains committed to environmentally friendly practices. Indeed, as Brendan Smith, SME’s CFO points out, sustainability is one of the company’s highest priorities. “We are an American company and we’re proud to use American steel. We uphold sustainability by recycling as much steel as possible, optimizing designs to maximize material efficiency, and utilizing energy-efficient fabrication processes to reduce waste and preserve resources. Beyond these initiatives, we are exploring green certifications and embracing innovative technologies to further decrease our environmental impact. Our efforts align closely with the construction industry’s growing emphasis on sustainability. Doing so empowers us to deliver high-quality projects while contributing to a more environmentally responsible future,” he ends.
“It’s been a long road from our humble beginnings. We were born from a bankrupt steel company and have grown into something special. We are incredibly proud of that journey,” Landon stated.
