Championing collaboration, Wiegmann Associates has grown from a regional mechanical contractor into a national design-build firm
For decades, Wiegmann Associates has helped owners and general contractors solve complex mechanical challenges by getting involved early in the design and planning process. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, Wiegmann Associates is a mechanical contractor focused primarily on HVAC design-build work for commercial, industrial, institutional and specialist facilities across the US. Over the decades, the company has grown steadily by building strong client relationships and delivering consistently, evolving from a regional contractor into a national business with completed projects across 43 states. “Even with that growth, we still operate very much like a family business. We try to stay hands-on, responsive and practical in the way we approach projects and relationships,” begins Grant Wiegmann, Vice President of Business Development.

Today, Wiegmann Associates employs more than 115 people and delivers projects ranging from several hundred thousand dollars to more than $35 million. The company’s hands-on approach extends to the breadth of solutions it offers. “We provide full mechanical and HVAC services, including design-build engineering, preconstruction, estimating, BIM coordination, piping, sheet metal, controls, building automation and project management. A key aspect of our operations is that we get involved early by helping owners and general contractors think through their options before the project gets too far down the road. In most cases, the best value comes from catching and solving problems early rather than trying to fix them mid-construction. We also try to balance first cost with factors like serviceability, energy performance and long-term reliability, because owners are increasingly looking beyond the lowest bid number,” Grant says.
“Aside from residential sectors, cold storage has become one of our fastest-growing markets because these facilities demand an entirely different level of planning and execution. Temperature stability, redundancy, energy performance, and uptime are critical. There is very little margin for error, making early coordination between the mechanical, refrigeration, structural, and electrical teams especially important.”
A recent project that illustrates the company’s capabilities well is the St. Charles City Center Complex, a development that is both locally significant and technically demanding. “The St. Charles City Center Complex has been a meaningful project for us on two levels. It is a major development in our local community, and it is also a genuinely challenging project from a mechanical standpoint. Our role has involved delivering HVAC systems that balance comfort, efficiency, constructability and long-term operation. Projects like this are particularly rewarding because they are highly visible and will serve the community for many years to come. It is always exciting when we get the opportunity to contribute to projects close to home,” he reflects.
Sustained growth
Beyond individual projects, Wiegmann Associates has also been expanding its value proposition through a new joint venture with EnergyPrint, a move that signals a shift towards performance-based energy solutions. The partnership allows the company to look beyond the installation of mechanical systems and focus more on how buildings actually perform over time. Owners today want greater visibility into how their facilities are operating, where energy is being used and where improvements can be made. By combining its HVAC expertise with energy analytics and ongoing performance monitoring, Wiegmann Associates is now better placed to help clients make smarter, longer-term decisions about their buildings.

Over the past year, Wiegmann Associates has been recognized multiple times by both ENR and the St. Louis Business Journal. According to Grant, the biggest driver behind this sustained growth and recognition is the people making the company what it is today. “We have been fortunate to build a strong team and enduring relationships with clients and general contractors who continue to trust us on important projects. Moreover, we have stayed disciplined about the type of work we pursue, focusing on areas where we can truly add value. At the end of the day, construction is still a reputation business, and consistency is what matters most. We’ve also continued investing in our people, technology, and preconstruction capabilities. Those long-term investments have helped us earn repeat business and sustained growth.”
Wiegmann Associates’ reputation was built from the inside out. Indeed, the company has always cultivated a collaborative culture around the core values of mentoring, teamwork, innovation and client focus. Within its walls, people are encouraged to share knowledge, support one another and speak up when they have ideas to contribute. Mentorship is especially important to the team, given the steep learning curve of the construction industry and the fact that much of the most valuable experience comes from working alongside people who have navigated similar challenges before. Some of Wiegmann Associates’ best improvements have come directly from field teams and project managers, who are the people closest to the actual work.
Underpinning all of it is a serious commitment to safety, which is reinforced by the company’s own Wiegmann Safety Program, built around training, planning, communication and accountability. “Safety is something we take very seriously. We want it to be part of the conversation before work begins, not just something reviewed after the fact. A strong safety culture also creates a better overall project environment, and organized, well-run job sites tend to operate more efficiently and professionally,” Grant concludes.
Looking ahead, Grant expects continued growth in design-build delivery, building automation, energy optimization, and AI-enabled building controls. While labor availability and supply-chain volatility remain industry challenges, Wiegmann Associates plans to continue investing in people, technology, and early collaboration to help clients deliver increasingly complex projects.
