Two standout companies within the Bartlett Group, Global Mechanical Turnaround Services (GMTS) and Precision Refractory Services, embody Bartlett’s commitment to quality and expertise. These companies deliver exceptional solutions across diverse industrial needs, showcasing the collective strength that positions Bartlett Group as a leader in industrial contracting services.
Global Mechanical Turnaround Services (GMTS), the mechanical division of Bartlett Group, excels in delivering both general and specialty mechanical services. GMTS brings extensive expertise to FCC and coker units, specializing in vessel modifications, valve replacements, transfer line adjustments, cyclone repairs, drum repair and replacement, and structural and skirt repairs. Under the leadership of Nathan Dagley, Vice President of Technical Services and Division Manager for GMTS, the company has consistently supported critical turnaround and maintenance projects across a variety of complex units.
Nathan Dagley highlights a recent Gulf Coast project that demonstrates the division’s capabilities. “We were tasked with planning and executing a major mechanical maintenance and revamp project on a coker unit. This included a Delta valve change-out on four drums and the installation of a monorail beam for 24-inch switch deck motor-operated valves.” GMTS’s role extended to crack repairs on skirts, drums, nozzles, valves and piping packages.
The project required three months of meticulous pre-turnaround planning and culminated in a demanding turnaround schedule. “We took charge of all lift and rigging design and planning, coordinating closely with the crane team to ensure seamless execution,” Dagley adds. From complex engineering solutions to precise project execution, GMTS continues to reinforce its reputation as a trusted partner for high-stakes mechanical turnaround and maintenance work.
Welding advancements
Precision Refractory Services continues to solidify its reputation as a vital division of Bartlett Group by pioneering advanced technologies that enhance both productivity and safety in the refractory industry. Among its key innovations is the implementation of rapid arc technology welding, a process that allows for welding refractory anchors at rates up to ten times faster than traditional methods. This technology, owned and operated exclusively by Precision, eliminates the need for third-party subcontractors while significantly reducing hexavalent chromium fumes, minimizing exposure risks for workers.
In addition to welding advancements, Precision employs hydraulic and robotic technologies for refractory demolition. These methods enhance productivity while reducing personnel exposure to silica dust and other potential hazards often encountered in manual demolition processes. The company also specializes in maintenance refractory repairs, fireproofing, and offers comprehensive shop capabilities for offsite work. With its forward-thinking approach and commitment to innovation, Precision Refractory remains a cornerstone of Bartlett Group’s success, delivering unmatched expertise and value to every project.
“Currently, Precision Refractory is ranked among the top six refractory companies in the US,” said Dagley.
To support this vision, Precision recently expanded its operations with a new facility in Baytown, Texas. This development includes a large indoor workspace featuring overhead cranes and several acres of laydown area for storage and project management. The facility also serves as the central hub for maintaining and repairing refractory tools and equipment, ensuring peak performance for future projects.
Dagley highlights the synergy between Precision and Bartlett Group’s GMTS division. “Both units collaborate closely on projects such as FCCUs, sulfur units, and fabrication at their shared facility,” he notes. GMTS provides welding quality control and engineering support, ensuring that Precision maintains compliance with the latest procedures and specifications.
