Abstract Construction is growing with intention and redefining the meaning of partnerships

While much of the construction industry chases growth at scale, Abstract Construction has chosen a different path, one rooted in intention, consistency, and long-term partnerships. Founded in 1974 by James Turner, Abstract Construction (Abstract) is a Dallas-Fort Worth based general contractor that has grown steadily by staying disciplined about the work it pursues and the people it hires. For more than 50 years, the company has served clients across corporate interiors, medical facilities, and building repositioning, earning a reputation for strong relationships and a predictable approach to project delivery. That consistency is reinforced by a culture built on trust, passion, communication, and growth, supporting long-term success.

Brady Lowry, President, joins us to elaborate on the company’s range of projects and services. “We offer general contracting, budgeting and preconstruction services, construction manager at-risk (CMAR), and design-build services,” Brady begins. “For corporate interiors, projects range from what we call ‘carpet and repaint’ work to multi-floor corporate office renovations. That includes demolition and renovation of existing tenant spaces, as well as spaces that have never been leased before. When an office building, retail, or industrial property changes hands or ages, the owners often choose to upgrade the site, amenities, and public spaces, or revise the primary use of the building. These projects require close coordination, as construction often takes place in buildings where other tenants are already occupying and operating in the space.

“Our medical projects are primarily clinical and surgery centers. We recently completed a surgery center project that included remodeling existing surgery suites, adding new suites, and renovating staff and administrative areas, all while the center remained fully operational and maintained its patient capacity.”

Partner of choice

Having celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024, we’re keen to ask Brady what factors have enabled such longevity and success. “We have been consistent in our approach to projects, industry relationships, company culture, and our people, taking a view of stability and conservative growth,” he states. “We take on projects that fit our business model, the talents of our people, and our availability to work. Rather than agreeing to projects and then scrambling to put a team in place, we do the opposite by attracting and retaining great people to bring additional capabilities to the business.”

Working exclusively in the Dallas-Fort Worth area means Abstract has a strong basis of partners across the region. “The clients we serve generally contract us for multiple construction projects each year, so it’s important that we are a company of highly skilled and caring builders that people can trust,” Brady explains. “Our seven core values are built around cultivating a culture that attracts and retains the types of people our clients want to work with. Our values focus on building a positive team and a winning attitude; embracing and driving learning, growth, and change; being passionate about success; having fun; thinking win-win; fostering a family atmosphere of trust, accountability, inclusion, and fairness; and building relationships through honest and open communication. We feel very strongly about these values and strive to embody them in everything we do.

“Our approach to partnerships extends to trade contractors too, and our longstanding relationships in this field, some of which are more than 30 years, are a point of pride for Abstract. Just as we want to be the favorite contractor for the clients we work with, we want to be the number one choice for the trade contractors that work with us.”

Award-winning workplace

Considering Abstract’s approach to partnerships, it’s no surprise that the company has been named as one of the ‘Best Places to Work in North Texas’ for three consecutive years and #2 Best Place to Work in North Texas for the last two years. “Being a Best Place to Work matters to us because it reflects something we care about deeply,” Brady states. “One of our biggest goals as a company is to help our people fully realize their success, both professionally and personally. We want to be a workplace where people can grow, take on additional responsibilities, and build meaningful careers while maintaining a healthy, balanced life. The Best Place to Work recognition is based entirely on anonymous feedback from our team, which makes it even more meaningful. It shows how our people truly feel about working at Abstract and the areas they care about the most. We focus on flexibility, wellbeing, and building a culture of care. When our people are happy and engaged, they bring the same energy to our clients.”

With decades of experience in the construction industry, we’re keen to get Brady’s view on how technology has evolved in this market. “Throughout my career I’ve seen various iterations of technologies to enhance the accuracy and quality of documents, speed up the flow of information and documentation, and streamline communication,” he shares. “We’re constantly reviewing our suite of digital tools to ensure we’re using the best solutions, and the availability of new software capabilities forces us to scrutinize internal processes and adapt to new solutions. Our project teams are now using AI tools too, and some of the ways in which AI can be utilized have challenged me to broaden my view on how we can use our time more effectively.”

Pushing process improvements

As Abstract continues to embrace innovative technologies while prioritizing its people, the company will inevitably maintain its reputation as a trusted partner. To close our conversation, Brady shares his ambitions for the business moving forward. “Abstract will continue to grow with intention, and we want to be known not just for the spaces we build, but for the experience our clients have along the way,” Brady concludes. “This means continuing to deliver predictable projects, expanding our presence in the markets where we already excel, and staying disciplined about the work we pursue. We’ll keep sharpening our operations, strengthening our data systems, and pushing for process improvements that make us faster and more reliable, while also investing in our people and culture. For us, success isn’t just about getting bigger, but rather getting better, delivering consistently, and being the contractor clients choose because they trust us to protect their time and investment.”
