When Gerry and Hans Langejans took over Windmill Mechanical Services Inc., they broadened the sheet metal company to include mechanical contracting and maintenance, HVAC and plumbing services. Gerry, president, and Hans, vice president, inherited the family business in 1994.

After 68 years in the industry, Calgary-based CANA Group of Companies continues to grow. In April, it acquired Calgary-based High Time Industries Ltd., a company that specializes in engineering, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning and maintenance of high voltage electrical facilities. This new division will join CANA’s other companies – CANA Construction, ACE Construction and Shepard Development Corporation.

A bridge is a crucial piece of infrastructure that is difficult to replace. So when a bridge to Vancouver needed renovation, it was done mostly at night while the bridge stayed open during the day. This particular job was done with the help of some employees of Buckland & Taylor Ltd., who had first-hand experience with it. If the bridge had been out, it would have affected their commute.

In the unpredictable climate of Canada’s Maritime Provinces, reliability and dependability are unquestioned requirements for the transportation industry. Seaside Transportation Services Inc. aims to perfect the delivery of these services throughout New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. As a privately owned carrier based in Rothesay, New Brunswick, with an office in Truro, Nova Scotia, Seaside Transportation services clients throughout Canada and the United States.

A developer’s intuition can be its most trusted asset. Intuition about location, design and timing can make the difference between a successful community and a hard-to-sell bargain. In the case of Focus Equities, its intuition about 10 acres it purchased on the Inner Harbor waterfront in Victoria, British Columbia was so strong that the company went back to purchase more. “It’s very seldom that you get an open site located by the ocean, within walking distance to a very interesting downtown core,” says Kenneth Mariash, founder of Focus Equities. “When we saw the first 10-acre parcel it was very compelling. We bought that in the 1990s and later on we purchased another 10 acres.” The 20-acre property is known as Bayview Place and represents the last developable piece of land on Victoria’s Inner Harbor.

Across North America, construction and renovation projects are a major part of the changing landscape of the healthcare industry. EllisDon Corp. is a key player in many of those construction projects thanks to a long history of successfully delivering innovative solutions on healthcare and research projects. “Any prospective client, especially in healthcare, immediately knows of EllisDon,” says Brent Day, EllisDon’s Project Manager for the new Regional Mental Health Care facility in London, Ontario. “We have a high staff retention rate and are consistently ranked as one of Canada’s top employers, retaining the experience we’ve gained over the years from delivering many major healthcare projects.”

A new wave of prosperity is headed straight for Calgary and many may argue the wave has already reached its shores. For the past decade, the world has watched the Althabasca Oil Sands in northeastern Alberta more closely as it is home to the world’s third-largest crude oil reserve. BMO Bank of Montreal announced Aug. 22 that it opened a $2.8 million branch in Calgary, its second branch in the city.

For Toronto, the waterfront along Lake Ontario is booming with development, as Waterfront Toronto, an agency of the federal, provincial and municipal governments transforms the former industrial edge of the lake and reconnects the city with the waterfront. George Brown College (GBC), also based in Toronto, will have the honor of being the first public institution to be located at the water’s edge.

Best Buy Canada and its acquired subsidiary Future Shop have had a busy 2011, according to Geoff Stollery, Best Buy Canada’s vice president of real estate development. By the end of this year, the company will launch 10 new stores. The Best Buy brand will open six new stores, and one relocation. Future Shop will expand its well-grounded Canadian presence with four new locations.
