United Communities

For many people, homes are not just places where they dwell, but instead places where they create memories as they build their families. United Communities specializes in helping clients do that through its work.

“For more than 27 years, United has developed new communities where parks, pathways and vibrant streetscapes frame some of life’s most memorable moments,” it says. “With operations in Calgary; Edmonton; Sacramento, Calif.; and a resort community in Kimberley, British Columbia, United operates with one common mission and philosophy.”

United’s philosophy includes the tenets of acting with integrity, respect, dedication and understanding, while its mission includes such values as providing customers with continually improving products and services. Additionally, “[We strive] to create and maintain an environment where responsible employees can achieve their objectives,” it says.

Best of Both Worlds

United’s projects include Nolan Hill, located in northwest Calgary. The project is designed to emulate “the craftsmanship and character of the British Isles – right down to the castle-ruin entry features,” according to the company.

“Spacious parks and playgrounds and miles of local and regional pathways offer a family friendly lifestyle,” United continues. “And with shopping, schools and recreation centers located conveniently nearby, Nolan Hill is truly the best of both worlds – old and new.”

Nolan Hill also features homes from high-profile builders in Calgary, including Shane Homes, Sterling Homes and Homes by Avi. “With a wide variety of floor plans, [clients] are sure to find a home that fits [their] family’s lifestyle,” United says.

Centered in Nature

United’s projects in Calgary also include Sage Hill, which is situated among rolling hills and green space. “The community was designed to be family friendly with plenty of parks, tot lots and pathways linking into a naturalized pond frequented by wildlife,” it says.

“The eye-catching single-family homes in the area have an abundance of detailing with rich colors and a variety of elevations to choose from,” United says. It adds that Sage Hill’s nearby amenities include the shopping centers of Creekside and Beacon Hills Shopping.

The company also has Drake Landing in Okotoks, Alberta, which is located above the town’s center and overlooks Sheep River Valley. United says the community provides residents with views of the local mountains and rolling foothills.

“In keeping with United’s vision and inspired by the natural surroundings, Drake Landing is also an incredibly unique community, offering an unprecedented alternative for homebuyers who value environmental stewardship and look for ways to reduce their environmental impact without sacrificing lifestyle choices,” United says. The community achieves this through water conservation measures and partnerships with Built Green Builders.

Drake Landing also has a large amount of linear green space, which is incorporated with the town’s regional pathway system. It also features a ravine with a naturalized pond, which is “frequented by wildlife and residents alike, taking advantage of the peaceful surroundings,” United says.

Out on the Ranch

United has The Ranch in the city of Strathmore, Alberta, which is 40 miles east of Calgary. The project aims to bring back “the charm of the old days,” United says. “The timeless design and country charm in this community is quickly gaining favor with Calgary area purchasers.”

When compared to other projects in Calgary, “Lot sizes in The Ranch are generous, with many capable of accommodating triple-car garages,” United says. “The expansive green space and outdoor recreational opportunities in The Ranch give residents an ideal place to live, play and explore.”

Wealth of Experience

United employs an experienced team, which includes President and CEO Donald J. Douglas, who served as the president of the company’s predecessor firms. “His wealth of land development experience through all market cycles is a key strength for the company,” it says.

Executive Vice President and CFO B. Paul Simpson joined the company in 1992 and has been in real estate development since 1988. “[His] experience in both the development and financial aspects of the business give him a more thorough understanding of residential development than most CFOs,” United says.

Vice President of the Edmonton Land Development Division Peter J. Cavanagh joined United Inc. in 1997 and took his current role in 2006. “Since joining United, Peter has been responsible for United’s land acquisitions and development activities in the Edmonton market,” United says. “He has acquired and initiated development of numerous new projects in the Edmonton area.”
